With intense winds and temperatures reaching 50 degrees below zero, thousands of men work in giant open-air mines 1.5 km in diameter. These mines, the size of lunar craters, are excavated by huge bulldozers that sometimes dig 300 meters into the permafrost, and then into black lava rock that is over 53 million years old.
